Carlos y Vanessa asistieron a la misma secundaria y preparatoria en Brownsville, Texas. Como nos conocimos
Después de ocho años y medio de relación a distancia, aprendieron a celebrar su amor de maneras poco tradicionales. Su aniversario es el 31 de enero, una fecha que casi nunca podian pasar juntos porque coincidía con el inicio del semestre de primavera. Así nació su tradición favorita: celebrar su “medio aniversario” el 31 de julio, cuando siempre estaban en casa durante el verano.Y siguen celebrándolo incluso después de que la distancia terminó. Para el décimo medio aniversario, Carlos tenía un plan… aunque Vane no tenía idea.
Ese día, Vane se arregló emocionada para celebrar, hasta que Carlos cambió los planes a último momento para supuestamente festejar el cumpleaños de una amiga en el Jardín Botánico. A Vane no le encantó la idea de caminar por el parque con tacones, en pleno verano y bajo el intenso calor de Texas… pero aceptó. Al llegar a una cascada, rodeada de flores que parecían estar esperando justo ese instante, todo empezó a sentirse diferente. El tiempo se detuvo. Carlos tomó aire, se arrodilló y, después de tantos años de amor, paciencia y distancia, finalmente hizo la pregunta que ambos sabían que llegaría algún día. Entre lágrimas, risas nerviosas y un “sí” que llevaba casi una década construyéndose, comenzó una nueva etapa para ellos. La Propuesta
Carlos and Vanessa attended the same middle school and high school in Brownsville, TX. However, they didn't really show interest in each other until Carlos’s senior year and Vanessa’s junior year. Carlos was probably too busy with school and Vane too busy with friends. They started off as really good friends, or so Vane thought. Even after asking her out to every school dance, Vane was still in complete denial that Carlos had a crush on her. Vane was sure nothing could come of it since Carlos was about to graduate.
After much insistence, Vane agreed to try a long-distance relationship while Carlos went to college. They dated for six months before Carlos left for college and the long-distance relationship began. By then, they both knew it was no longer a “let's see what happens” situation. Carlos went to Texas A&M University and moved to College Station, while Vane stayed behind to finish high school and eventually moved to Lubbock, Texas, to attend Texas Tech University. Seven hours of highway separated them, and neither of them had a car. The next eight years would consist of endless FaceTime calls, constant texting, quick visits during holidays, and at one point, even different time zones. They learned to support each other from afar, celebrate milestones remotely, and choose each other every day.
When they both finished college, they knew it was time to close the chapter on distance. They both moved to the Midwest for a year while Carlos completed his pharmacy residency in Indiana. When that year was over, they quickly returned to Texas and decided it was time to commit... so they got a dog! Concha came into their lives, and with her came visits to the vet, the emergency room, and the orthopedist's office. Vane began to suspect that the ring might take another ten years to arrive. What she did know was that, from those high school hallways to today, they have always chosen to walk together. Their story has not been quick or easy, but it has been steady, patient, and full of love.
How we met
The Proposal
After eight and a half years of long-distance dating, they learned to celebrate their love in unconventional ways. Their anniversary is January 31, a date they could almost never spend together because it coincided with the start of the spring semester. That's how their favorite tradition was born: celebrating their “half anniversary” on July 31, when they were always home for the summer. And they continue to celebrate it even after the distance ended. For their tenth half anniversary, Carlos had a plan... although Vane had no idea.
That day, Vane got dressed up excitedly to celebrate, until Carlos changed plans at the last minute to supposedly celebrate a friend's birthday at the Botanical Garden. Vane wasn't thrilled about the idea of walking through the park in heels, in the middle of summer and under the intense Texas heat... but she agreed. When they arrived at a waterfall, surrounded by flowers that seemed to be waiting for just that moment, everything started to feel different. Time stood still. Carlos took a deep breath, knelt down, and after so many years of love, patience, and distance, he finally asked the question that they both knew would come someday. Amid tears, nervous laughter, and a “yes” that had been almost a decade in the making, a new chapter began for them. After a photo shoot of this long-awaited moment, talking to family and friends on Facetime, and having a margarita, Carlos told Vane that he had booked a private dinner to celebrate their engagement. They arrived at the restaurant and were surprised to find their families there to celebrate their engagement. That night, they shared memories, dreams, and many wishes for their future. It was the perfect way to officially begin the next chapter of their story. After so many miles, endless phone calls, and years of waiting... finally, there was no more distance. Only a “forever” ahead of them.
